Most businesses count everything equally. The Pareto principle says 80% of revenue comes from 20% of SKUs. ABC classification applies that logic to counting frequency: count what moves your margin weekly, count the middle monthly, check the bottom quarterly.

Pull your sales data for the last 90 days. Sort by revenue contribution, highest to lowest. The top 20% by revenue are your A items. The next 30% are B. The bottom 50% are C.

Items you can legitimately stop counting on a regular schedule: consumables under $1 per unit with stable usage patterns, fixed-quantity safety equipment (fire extinguishers, first aid kits), items with automated reorder triggers from a connected supplier, and seasonal items during their off-season storage period.

Q: What if a C item suddenly becomes important?
A: Reclassify quarterly. Any C item showing more than 10% variance in a spot-check gets promoted to B immediately.
Q: Should I count A items more than once a week?
A: Only for items with daily expiry risk. High-value perishables (fresh fish, daily-baked items) warrant daily counts. Most A items are fine weekly.
